# Your Best Expert Cannot Be Everywhere. Their Knowledge Can.

[← Volver al blog](/es/insights)

For more than 30 years, I have watched industrial companies invest in better products and better ways for customers to serve themselves.

Configurators. Engineering tools. Online catalogs. Customer portals.

All useful.

But there is usually a moment before those tools can help.

The customer knows what they want to accomplish, but not which product or configuration will get them there.

That is when they need an expert.

It is also where many industrial websites fall short.

## Complexity Can Get in the Way

item offers more than 4,500 mutually compatible components for industrial building systems. It also provides configurators, an Engineeringtool, sample solutions, and experienced item Experts.

That is a lot of capability.

It is also a lot for a customer to navigate.

A customer designing a machine frame or work cell may not begin with a part number. They begin with an idea or a problem.

They need someone who can ask the right questions and point them in the right direction.

A catalog cannot always do that.

A search box certainly cannot.

And a generic chatbot should not be trusted to guess.

## Make Expertise Available When Customers Need It

That is why the item Expert Agent is important.

item and ReshapeX built an AI agent that makes the guidance of item Experts available on the company’s US and Mexico websites, in English and Spanish, at any hour.

The agent does two things.

It answers detailed questions using item’s actual product data. It also helps customers find the right product line, sample solution, configurator, Engineeringtool, documentation, or person.

That distinction matters.

A chatbot answers a question.

A good industrial agent helps the customer take the next step.

## The Expert Is Still Essential

This is not about replacing item Experts.

Their experience and judgment are what make the advice valuable. The agent was built by working with those Experts and learning how they guide customers.

The goal is to make that knowledge available to more people.

That means:

* Customers can get help outside normal business hours
* Routine questions do not consume an Expert’s time
* Customers in different markets receive consistent guidance
* Human Experts can step in with the conversation history already available

The Expert remains essential.

Their knowledge simply travels farther.

## Accuracy Comes First

Industrial advice cannot be approximately correct.

If an agent recommends a profile, fastener, component, or load rating, someone may build something based on that answer.

A confidently wrong answer is worse than no answer at all.

The item agent is grounded in the company’s real product information. When it can validate an answer, it responds. When it cannot, it brings in an item Expert and preserves the conversation.

It does not invent an answer just to keep talking.

That separates a useful industrial agent from an impressive demo.

## Why This Matters

item started with something the company already does well: expert product and application guidance.

Then it used AI to make that expertise available to more customers, in more places, at more times.

That is the lesson for industrial companies.

Do not add a generic chatbot because everyone else is talking about AI.

Start with something your customers already value. Ground it in real product knowledge. Connect it to the way customers actually buy. Give it clear limits and a path to a human.

item is not using AI for innovation’s sake.

It is using AI to help more customers turn ideas into solutions.

That is why our industry should pay attention.
