# More than a chatbot: an item Expert wired into the customer journey

item is the pioneer in building kit systems for industrial applications and a global market leader. Its philosophy is on every page: your ideas are worth it. item and Reshape built an AI agent that extends the tailored advice of the item Experts to every visitor on item's US and Mexico websites, in English or Spanish, around the clock — as both a technical expert and a guide.

#### With the item agent, item and Reshape have:

* Extended the tailored advice of the item Experts to every visitor on item's US and Mexico websites, around the clock, in English and Spanish.
* Grounded every technical answer in item's real product data, so the guidance is accurate enough to build on, with a clean handoff to a person whenever the agent reaches the edge of what it can validate.
* Guided customers to the right next step in the item system, whether a configurator, a preconfigured sample solution, the Engineeringtool, documentation, or a person.
* Connected the agent into item's digital journey, so a conversation is never lost, follow-up can happen, and a human always picks up with full context.
* Captured how item's own Experts give advice through the Forward Deployed Engineer model, building the agent around the way item already serves its customers.

## The promise, and the limit of the clock

item has spent decades making industrial design approachable. The MB Building Kit System gives customers more than 4,500 mutually compatible components, and item surrounds that system with everything a customer needs to put it to work: preconfigured sample solutions, an Application Gallery, the Engineeringtool and the online configurators, and authorized pluspartners across the US and Mexico. The promise on every page is “your ideas are worth it,” and item delivers on it with versatile products, innovative online tools, and real people.

At the center of that promise are the item Experts: the team that gives tailored advice, understands a customer’s application, and points them to the right solution. That expert advice is item’s signature. It is also the one thing in the system that cannot be in two places at once. An expert guides one customer at a time, during business hours, in the languages they speak. A customer browsing the site late in the evening, or simply moving faster than a sales conversation can keep up with, waits for that expertise to become available.

The configurators and the Engineeringtool already help enormously once a customer knows roughly what they want to build. The moment item set out to serve is the one just before that: a customer who has an application in mind and wants the kind of guidance an item Expert gives, exactly when they are looking for it.

## An item Expert, available to everyone

item already has excellent configurators and the Engineeringtool, and they are central to how customers design with item. The agent does not replace them. It does what the item Experts do, and it points customers toward the right tool, the right sample solution, or the right product line as part of the conversation.

It plays two roles at once. As a technical expert, it answers detailed questions about the building kit system, grounded in item’s real product data so the guidance is accurate, not merely plausible. As a guide, it does what an item Expert does on a call: it understands the customer’s application, asks the right questions, and walks them toward a workable solution and the right next step, whether that is a configurator, a preconfigured sample solution, the Engineeringtool, documentation, or a person.

A customer in Michigan and a customer in Querétaro get the same tailored advice item is known for, each in their own language, at any hour.

## Why accuracy is non-negotiable

It would be easy to assume that a guide can be approximate, that a friendly steer is enough. With item’s products, it is not. The moment the agent recommends a specific profile, a specific fastener, a specific load rating, it is making a technical claim a customer will build on. An aluminum framing system carries real weight, in the literal sense. A confidently wrong recommendation is worse than no recommendation at all.

Reshape builds for that bar. The agent runs on Reshape’s knowledge grounding, so its answers are tied to item’s real product data rather than generated from a language model’s general training. What it can validate, it answers. What it cannot, it routes to an item Expert, with the full conversation already in hand so the customer never has to start over. The agent does not guess at a load rating to keep a conversation moving. What it does not know, it does not invent.

### 4,500+

mutually compatible components in the MB Building Kit System — every recommendation grounded in item's real product data, answered from the source, not from memory.

Helpful guidance and technical accuracy are not in tension. The accuracy is what makes the guidance worth trusting, and it is what lets an automated answer carry the item name.

> In industrial, a confidently wrong answer is worse than no answer at all. Someone builds on it. So we don't trust the model to know item's products, we ground it in item's real data and we let it say 'I don't know, let me get you a person.' What it doesn't know, it doesn't invent. That's the difference between a demo and something a company can put its name on.

## Built the way Reshape builds: an engineer on the inside

The reason the agent can advise like an item Expert is that a Reshape Forward Deployed Engineer worked alongside item’s own Experts to capture how they actually guide a customer. Not from a product catalogue, which describes components, but from the people who know which questions to ask when a customer describes an application, and which item solution fits which problem. That reasoning is the hard part. It rarely lives in documentation. It lives in the Experts, and the only way to capture it is to sit with them.

That is the Forward Deployed Engineer model behind every Reshape deployment. An engineer embeds with the customer’s team, learns the domain from the people who hold it, and builds the agent around that knowledge rather than handing software over a wall and hoping.

## Connected to item’s digital journey

An agent that only talks is an island. The item agent is connected into item’s digital systems, which is what lets a conversation become more than a single exchange.

When a customer engages, the interaction is not lost when the browser closes. It becomes part of item’s view of that customer’s journey, so the right follow-up can happen and an item Expert can pick up later with full context instead of a cold start. The same connection lets item meet customers proactively rather than only waiting for them to arrive.

The point is the customer’s experience, not the integration diagram. A question asked late at night does not evaporate. A promising conversation does not die in a chat window. And when an item Expert steps in, they step into a conversation already in progress, not back to square one.

That same connection lets item reach out, not just respond. Based on what a customer shows interest in, item can push relevant campaigns to them, the right information at the moment and place it matters, rather than waiting for the customer to come looking for it.

## One journey, end to end

A customer in Mexico arrives on item’s site in the evening with an application in mind: a safe, reconfigurable work cell around a new cobot. The agent greets them in Spanish, asks the questions an item Expert would ask, and guides them from the application to the right product lines and a workable starting point, pointing them to a relevant sample solution and the configurator, and answering technical questions about loads, profiles, and compatibility along the way. The conversation carries forward. A relevant follow-up reaches the customer afterward. When the project is ready for hands-on help, an item Expert picks it up with the full history already in front of them. One continuous journey. Nothing lost. Nothing starting from zero.

## What’s next

The agent already covers item's full portfolio. From here, it deepens: the agent learns with every conversation, and there will be more touch points across the customer journey over time.

The idea generalizes. Any company whose advice is its signature, and whose experts are necessarily finite, faces the same question item did: how to give every customer that expert guidance, in every market, at every hour, without diluting the accuracy that made the advice worth having in the first place. item’s answer is to put an item Expert on the site that never closes, grounded well enough to carry the item name. Your ideas are worth it, at any hour, in any language.

> Most AI on a website waits for you to ask and forgets you the moment you leave. The item agent is part of item's journey, not a box bolted onto it. It recognizes the customer, it carries the conversation forward, and it can reach out with the right thing at the right time. An answer is the start of a relationship, not the end of a transaction.
